Westinghouse Head Office

For many years, the old Westinghouse Head Office in Hamilton has proven to be a tough nut to crack. Many have gone by to scout it, only to be rebuffed by a completely sealed building, and nosy neighbours who watch the place like a hawk and will call the police on those who they deem suspicious. And so, many have sat and waited for a chance to finally see the interior.

And the opportunity has come, if only briefly. A door left unchained by mistake has allowed access to the building; something that one suspects hasn't been accessible since 2002, judging from the minimal dated graffiti inside.

Unfortunately, that wait may not be worth as much as many have hoped. The building has been thoroughly gutted, with minimal construction equipment inside. To make matters worse, every single window has been boarded over, making natural light an impossibility inside. The result is a building that has little to see, and is extremely difficult to photograph.

The most interesting aspects of the building are the architectural details; while there are a few inside the majority of them are on the outside. While I didn't stop to photograph them as the weather was not co-operative (and also to avoid raising suspicion when we exited), I do plan to return at some point to do so.

All in all, the Westinghouse Head Office did provide something to do on a Sunday afternoon, but ultimately only provided closure to a building that had been watched for so long.

MARCH 21, 2019 UPDATE
The building is now the headquarters of McCallum Sauther Architects. Looks like this happened sometime in early 2018.
