Ontario Paper

On the banks of the Welland Canal sits the Resolute Forest Products facility; a sprawling industrial complex with a storied past. Long before Resolute was in the picture, the property was first established by Ontario Paper Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Chicago Tribune. Consolidation in the industry since the 1980's has led to the vanishing of the name Ontario Paper, but it's roots still remain at the site.

Unfortunately for us, the mill and heavy industrial sites on the property remain very active, and thus out of our reach for now. However, one building on the property sits abandoned, in an easy spot to reach. From the outside, nothing appears to be amiss with it; only the lack of people coming and going speak to the fact that it sits disused. And all it took was some timing, and we slipped in through the POE.

The building once served as the administrative offices for Ontario Paper, complete with the in-house trades training areas, and the medical examination offices for employees. Quite a bit of material remains in the building from the days when it was active; although with mold starting to set in, those days were quite some time in the past. The second floor of the training and medical side of the building is particularly hard hit, with mold chewing up the drywall in large areas.

The building is connected to the original mill site for Ontario Paper (and possibly the modern Resolute mill via the original mill), but doors bolted and screwed shut made it all but impossible to determine how much of the original mill can be accessed. Unlike the admin building, the original mill does still have power to it, but it is mostly boarded up so a lot of question remain about it.

Hopefully those questions are answered in the near future, as I have a feeling we're just getting started on this industrial complex.
