Mt. Hope Chapel

Sitting towards the south end of the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester is a small-ish building, built in Victorian architecture, that is distinctly a chapel of some form due to the shape of the building. But closer inspection reveals that the building has been left to the passage of time... doors and windows are boarded over to prevent entry.

One of two chapel buildings at Mt. Hope (the second being the chapel attached to the crematorium near the North Gate), the south chapel is the newer of the two buildings and was constructed specifically for funeral services. This much is obvious on the inside, where a hoist system for raising and lower caskets during services exists, as well as a large storage area in the basement for caskets.

The building has not been used in four decades, owing largely to structural problems (specifically, differential settling of the foundation, compromising it). But it also has not seen vandals in that time... the interior remains untouched except damage through neglect, such as the collapse of the pipe organ.

The stained glass windows inside are spectacular during the daylight hours, catching the sun and brilliantly illuminating the interior. The carved angels that cap the ends of the pews are also a beautiful touch, as are the stone faces that cap the columns supporting the roof. And the carvings in the wooden roof beams are also spectacular, despite my inability to get a decent photo of them.

Everything else remains intact, albeit dusty. While there are plans to reuse the space, those have yet to come to fruition.
