Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular & Biomolecular Research
University of Toronto

The Terrence Donnelly CCBR, or BioMed Building as it is known to the older generation of U of T students who were around during it's construction, is currently the tallest building on the U of T campus. Sitting where Taddle Creek Drive used to run, it is fashioned from a concrete and glass design, like many of the newer buildings on campus.

I had the chance to explore this building back when it was under construction; everything was wide open for all to see. I didn't normally carry a camera back then, so I don't have the photos from the construction phase or of the rubber floors in the basement, in what is presumably the killing room for animals that will become part of scientific research. The room, even before use, gave a very chilling feeling, knowing what it would be used for one day.

Now, the building is completed and very secure. Keycard doors are all over the place, to prevent unauthorized access. It's extremely difficult to get down to the basement and killing floor room. The roof penthouse isn't as difficult, nor is the mid-building mechanical room (which is visible from the street), but there is always staff around the building, including at least one security guard. There are, as well, motion sensors and cameras throughout the building.

The view from the highest roof is amazing, but it comes at a cost... the roof is alarmed and this alarm is very quickly responded to. I unfortunately discovered this the hard way.

The alarm is likely related to the cell repeaters that are attached to the top of the building. I don't doubt that other parts of the building are also alarmed, so you need to be careful in there.

Hazards wise, it's like any newer building in the mechanical rooms; don't be stupid and you'll be fine. Also, try not to fall off the roof.

Other than the view from the roof, it's not that special. And seeing how the view from the roof may give you the added bonus of exploring the back of a campus police cruiser, it's definitely nothing special.
